The Whirlwind SelectorXL is a footswitch device that provides two signal paths for a microphone with independent muting of each path. Switching between outputs is completely silent and noise free. This handy stomp box allows users of in-ear monitors to turn off the microphone signal to the front of house PA system and communicate privately with other band members or the monitor engineer through a second output. It also has many other possible uses for temporarily muting or switching a mic signal. The footswitch can be operated in several modes, with either momentaryor alternate (push on, push off) action, by configuring the internal mode selection dipswitches. Outputs A and B are male XLRs and the input is a female XLR. The SelectorXL works with both dynamic and condenser microphones. It must be powered with the included PS24AC power supply when using condenser mics.
48 Volt phantom power is supplied to the microphone input jack even when it is muted. When the SelectorXL is used with dynamic mics, a 9V battery will provide many hours of service. Silent, noise free microphone switching is achieved with innovative circuit design and new technology. When the microphone is driving one output, turning on and off a second output results in load changes on the microphone that affect its level. The sudden change in load also can cause clicks or pops to a non-changing output. The Selector XL circuit utilizes new state-of-the-art audio amplifier ICs capable of noise levels almost as low as physics allow. With these amplifiers buffering the microphone, it is difficult to measure (or hear) any contribution in noise or distortion even with the very best microphone feeding the best state-of-the-art microphone preamps.
